Lankan guard accused of stealing from ATM in Qatar

E-mail Print PDF

(Colombo-Lankapuvath) A guard allegedly stole cash from a local bank after dismantling the surveillance camera, a court heard on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old Sri Lankan guard is believed to have stolen Dh8,000 from an ATM machine at the bank’s branch in Al Khor area. He was charged with theft in the Court of First Instance.

The manager of the investigation section at a security firm said he knew in mid February from the operations section of the firm that Dh8,000 was missing from the bank’s ATM machine in Al Khor branch.

The manager went to the branch and learnt from two security guards that the ATM had been out of order. The two security guards had been called in to fix the machine. They opened it and fixed it and found a sum of Dh40,000 stuck in one of its cases.

They put the money in an envelope and put it back in the machine, but failed to lock it.

When one of them came back shortly later to lock the machine, he found that the envelope’s place had been changed. He counted the money and found that Dh8,000 was missing. He informed the operations room which in turn informed the manager. The manager searched the two security staff and did not find the money with them.

The manager then asked the defendant, who was on duty as a guard there, to run the surveillance camera.

The defendant told him that the camera was not working that day. He then asked him to bring the CCTV records. The manager noticed that some data in the records had been tampered with.

He called for a CCTV technician and knew that someone had stopped the camera. The technician started the camera again and the police was called.

In the prosecution investigation, the defendant claimed that he voluntarily admitted to his manager and the police that he had stolen the sum after finding the envelope left in the unlocked machine. He said he had handed the money back. (KhaleejTimes)

When asked whether the CPM, claiming to be a Marxist-Leninist party, had abandoned the principle of self-determination rights for nationalities, he said a decision should not be imposed on the Sri Lankan people fro-m outside. It was for the people of the island to decide. When asked whether people’s wish should be ascertained from a referendum, he rejected it, Express News Service reports.
