(Colombo Lankapuvath) Sri Lanka today celebrates it 64th Independence Day with a great and genuine sense of dignity about freedom, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in his Independence day message to the citizens of the Sri Lanka.
Today, the National Flag flutters, pointing to a new country, in the making. The path is now open for an independent economy.
It daily reinforces the nation’s aspiration for a prosperous future. IT has given us freedom to decide upon issues concerning the country and the nation without bowing down before external powers.
President, in his message said that he strongly believes that it is the immense responsibility the nation entrusted upon us. It is a great pleasure to see the great consolidation and the supreme of independence, he added.
The country’s achievements would be secured when opportunity for peace, co-existence as well as harmonious living, are widened. Sacrifices made so far to reach out for these objectives have to be secured in future too. ‘ We would no longer hesitate to take decisions towards fostering national unity trough an indigenous programme of action. ‘ We overcame diverse challenges the country faced with extreme patience. We have built a productive economic, defence, political, trade and cultural links with the international community through friendly contacts. All this must be preserved by working more rationally, intelligently and patriotically even than before.
Similar the country should be brought forward developing its value system. It is only then that the prosperous life would emerge in a peaceful environment, the President noted.
The nation’s respect and felicitation should go to all patriots who paid the supreme sacrifice, laying their lives to overcome the nation’s challenges for the sake of supreme independence, added the President.
