(Colombo-Lankapuvath) The setting up of one million domestic economic units, a key component of the ‘Divi Neguma’ programme, would add Rs.15 billion to the national economy, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.
The aim of the programme is to meet the domestic demands of nutritious vegetables and fruits from home gardening and to create a way to get extra income from home gardening in order to create an economically strengthen country, he said.
Minister made these comments at a media briefing today (02) held at the Presidential Secretariat.
The programme will be implemented island wide in all the Grama Niladhari Divisions and is expected to strengthen agricultural, fishery, livestock development, milk production and cultivation of additional food crops, self-employment, export agricultural crops, home gardening and other economic oriented activities.
In the one million domestic unit initiative, Samurdhi officers, Agricultural services officers, Grama Niladharis and family health officers will be the coordinators at grass-roots level.
